Duke Energy has brought on line a 50-megawatt, four-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) at its former Allen coal plant on Lake Wylie, serving customers in North Carolina and South Carolina, and has unveiled plans for additional battery storage and new jobs at the Gaston County site.

Duke Energy Florida unveiled its DeBary Hydrogen Production Storage System in Volusia County, the first demonstration project in the United States capable of using an end-to-end system to produce, store and combust up to 100% green hydrogen.

Duke Energy today filed its biennial long-range energy modernization plan for its dual-state system with the North Carolina Utilities Commission.

Nearly one year ago, Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida within just weeks, impacting nearly 2 million customers. The two storms resulted in an unprecedented level of activation as Duke Energy Florida mobilized nearly 25,000 workers and resources to restore outages. Most outages were restored within 72 hours of the storm strikes.

Today marks the mid-point of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, and Duke Energy Florida is highlighting the company’s smart, self-healing technology and its significant benefits to customers.

While the 2025 hurricane season began on June 1, Duke Energy Florida has been preparing year-round, strengthening the company’s infrastructure and employing smart tools to help prevent power outages and allow for quicker restoration for its 2 million customers.

Today, Duke Energy Florida announced the launch of three new programs – the Charger Prep Credit, Off-Peak Charging Credit and Fleet Advisory programs – to offer both residential and business customers more choices related to electric vehicles (EVs).

With the summer months and sweltering temperatures quickly approaching, Duke Energy Florida is highlighting EnergyWise Home, a voluntary program that rewards customers with up to $141 in annual bill credits for enrolling select appliances – central air conditioning units, electric water heaters and/or pool pumps – and allowing the company to temporarily cycle those appliances off during periods of high electricity demand.

Today, Duke Energy Florida announced the company’s large-scale battery facility in the Alachua County town of Micanopy is now capable of providing backup power to the local community, including homes, businesses, schools, public safety buildings and more, when it is needed most – during storms.

Duke Energy has made proposals to the North Carolina Utilities Commission and the Public Service Commission of South Carolina to help customers in both states to receive the benefits of solar energy without the commitment and expense of installing and maintaining rooftop panels.
