National Safe Digging Day (also known as 811 Day) is observed Aug. 11, and Piedmont Natural Gas and Duke Energy are reminding professional excavators and do-it-yourselfers of the importance of calling 811 before digging to protect the nation’s underground utility infrastructure, prevent potential injury and avoid electric and natural gas outages.

With the heat reaching record-breaking levels in some areas around the state, Duke Energy is providing tools and tips to help customers save energy – and money.

Duke Energy has restored power to more than 250,000 Indiana customers, but multiple waves of storms have added new outages. As of 12 p.m. today, about 45,000 customers remain without power. The company is aiming to restore the vast majority of these customers by midnight Sunday, but restoration efforts could be affected by additional storms that may move through the state.

Duke Energy crews continue to make progress bringing customers back to service from Thursday’s powerful storms, with approximately 169,000 customers restored. Crews are also responding to power outages from new storm systems that have caused an additional 20,000 outages, but overall power outages are down statewide to approximately 76,000 as of Saturday morning.
